Heavy rainfall in Pune and surrounding areas has led to significant water accumulation, with levels reaching 2 to 3 feet in some parts of the city after the release of water from Khadakwasla Dam. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar attributed the situation to substantial rainfall, but citizens are frustrated over the lack of warning. Residents in affected areas, including vulnerable groups like women and newborns, have expressed anger and demanded answers from the administration.

The release of water into the Mutha River basin began at 6 a.m. at a rate of 35,574 cusecs, with an average rainfall of 100 mm in the dam area and over 200 mm in the ghat region. The discharge rate may increase depending on ongoing rainfall, leading to restrictions on citizens visiting certain areas. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has instructed the Water Resources Department to maximise water release from all four dams in the Khadakwasla Dam Chain Project to prevent further suffering for citizens.
