Hey Pune folks, it’s time to take some extra precautions as the recent flooding in the city has raised concerns about water-borne and insect-borne diseases. With the heavy rains causing flooding in several areas, the risk of epidemics spreading is on the rise.

The Health Department of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sprung into action and implemented preventive measures in the affected areas. The flooding mainly affected the riverbank area on Sinhagad Road, with water entering many homes due to increased discharge from the Khadakwasla Dam.

Although the floodwaters have started to recede, there are still areas with accumulated water and submerged roads, creating a breeding ground for diseases. The city has already seen a spike in dengue cases this month, with Zika and chikungunya cases also on the rise, and the numbers are expected to go up further.

To combat the spread of diseases, the PMC Health Department is actively spraying medicine to prevent mosquito breeding and carrying out fumigation in areas with high mosquito populations. They are also distributing Medichlor medicine to disinfect drinking water and prevent water-borne diseases. Additionally, medical officers are administering preventive medicine to address the risk of leptospirosis from contaminated floodwater.

Dr Nina Borade, the Head of Health at PMC, has deployed mobile medical teams to provide immediate healthcare to those in the flood-affected areas. PMC clinics have an adequate stock of medicines, and health department employees are conducting house-to-house visits and surveying patients in the affected areas.

So, stay safe, Pune! Take necessary precautions, and make sure to seek medical help if needed. Let’s work together to prevent the spread of diseases in our city.
