Hey Pune and Pimpri residents, have you heard about the latest development in the Metro route extension project? Well, it seems like some trees will have to make way for progress. A total of 57 trees are set to be chopped down to make room for the 4.41 km long extended route from Pimpri to Nigdi.

The Rail Vikas Nigam is working on building the viaduct route, but it has sparked outrage among environmentalists. The 15-year-old trees are being cut down as they are causing obstacles in the construction work. Pillars are being raised near the Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe PMPML Bus Depot, leading to the chopping of some trees along the way.

In addition, nine trees have been chopped near the Shri Krishna temple under the circular flyover in Nigdi. Tree lovers have raised their concerns and even lodged a complaint with the civic body. The species of trees facing the axe include tabebuia, peltophorum, fistel map, neem, banyan, ashoka, pipal, umbar, ficus, rain tree, spathodea, jamum, and jackfruit.

But don’t worry, the civic body has given permission for the tree cutting, with a promise to plant 10 trees for each one that is felled. Some of the trees will also be transplanted to ensure their survival. MahaMetro has already sought and received approval from the civic body for the tree cutting.

So, while it may be sad to see these trees go, it looks like steps are being taken to mitigate the environmental impact. Let’s hope that the new trees planted will thrive and make up for the loss of these green giants along the Metro route. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
