Pune is gearing up to establish two vehicle scrapping centres within the next few months, according to the Maharashtra State Transport Department. Vivek Bhimanwar, the state transport commissioner, revealed that two locations in Pune have been identified for these centres.

The vehicle scrapping policy, approved by the central government in 2021, required the creation of state-approved scrapping centres. Maharashtra currently has three out of the twelve designated centres, with two in Jalna district and one in Nagpur.

Swapnil Bhosle, Pune’s deputy RTO, mentioned that vehicle owners opting to scrap their vehicles at these new centres will receive a 10% tax concession on a new vehicle. The RTO will oversee the operations of these centres to ensure transparency and proper procedures are followed.

An RTO official acknowledged that some people are hesitant to scrap their old vehicles due to concerns about misuse. However, with government-approved centres, the entire scrapping process will be closely monitored to prevent any misuse. Commercial vehicles older than 15 years are required to be scrapped, while owners of private vehicles are encouraged to do so for environmental reasons.

The RTO official stressed the importance of scrapping old vehicles for the environment and assured that the upcoming centres will be well-publicized and maintained. Stay tuned for more updates on this development in Pune.
