Pune, get ready for a new way to get rid of your old vehicles! The Maharashtra State Transport Department is gearing up to open two vehicle scrapping centres in the city within the next 2-3 months.

According to state transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar, the department has already selected two locations for the centres in Pune. These centres are part of the vehicle scrapping policy approved by the central government in 2021, which aims to promote the scrapping of old vehicles in an environmentally friendly manner.

Deputy RTO Swapnil Bhosle mentioned that vehicle owners opting to scrap their old vehicles at these new centres will receive a 10% tax concession on the purchase of a new vehicle. The RTO will oversee the operations of these centres to ensure that the scrapping process is closely monitored and that accurate records are maintained.

There are concerns about the potential misuse of old vehicles, as some people prefer to hang on to their vehicles even if they are no longer operational. However, with the government-approved scrapping centres in place, the process will be regulated to ensure that it is done responsibly.

In terms of the regulatory framework, commercial vehicles older than 15 years are required to be scrapped, while private vehicle owners have the option to re-register their vehicles for an additional five years by paying a green tax. The RTO is encouraging the public to take advantage of these new centres for the environmental benefits they offer.

Keep an eye out for more updates on the opening of the vehicle scrapping centres in Pune and how you can benefit from this new initiative!
