Attention Punekars! Good news for all the tomato lovers out there! The skyrocketing prices of tomatoes in the retail market have finally come down to earth. After reaching an all-time high of ₹100 per kilogram, the prices have now dropped significantly. Thanks to increased arrivals, the cost of one kilogram of tomatoes now ranges from ₹40 to ₹50.

The month of July saw a gradual increase in tomato prices due to a decrease in arrivals compared to the high demand. The shortage was attributed to a lack of newly planted tomatoes in the market. Senior trader Vilas Bhujbal explained that the price hike was a result of reduced tomato arrivals caused by the rain. Tomatoes from Khed, Manchar, Ambegaon, and Junnar areas were sent in large quantities to markets in Pune and Mumbai.

Previously, the wholesale market in Pune’s market yard received four to five thousand boxes of tomatoes daily. However, with the recent surge in tomato arrivals post-rainy season, the number of boxes has doubled. This increase in supply has led to a significant drop in prices, and they are not expected to rise significantly anytime soon.

Vegetable trader Prakash Dhamdhere mentioned that just a week ago, the price of tomatoes ranged between ₹90 and ₹120 per kilogram, depending on the grade. But with the unexpected increase in tomato arrivals in the past few days, prices have seen a sharp decline.

So, for all the tomato enthusiasts out there, rejoice! You can now enjoy your favorite fruit without burning a hole in your pocket. With wholesale prices ranging from ₹100 to ₹200 per ten kilograms and retail prices of ₹40 to ₹50 per kilogram, tomatoes are now more affordable than ever. Happy cooking, Punekars!
