Pune is currently facing a surge in Zika virus cases after recent floods wreaked havoc in the city. On Wednesday alone, seven new infections were reported, with six of the patients being pregnant women. This brings the total number of Zika cases in Pune to 73, with four fatalities recorded so far.

The Dahanukar Colony Ward Office area has the highest concentration of Zika cases, with 16 patients, followed by Erandwane with 14 cases. Other affected areas include Kharadi, Ghole Road, Sukhsagarnagar, Pashan, Mundhwa, Ambegaon Budruk, Kalas, Lohgaon, Dhankawadi, Koregaon Park, and Wanwadi.

Due to the ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes created by the floods, efforts to control the outbreak have been hampered by continuous rains. The health department is prioritizing the screening of pregnant women in affected areas and sending blood samples to the National Institute of Virology for testing.

Dr. Nina Borade, Head of Health at the Pune Municipal Corporation, highlighted the measures being taken to combat the outbreak, including spraying mosquito repellents and conducting public awareness campaigns. With 32 pregnant patients among the 73 cases, the health department is working tirelessly to contain the spread of the virus.
