Pune’s public transport system, PMPML, is facing a tough time as the number of operational buses in its fleet continues to decline. Factors like bus breakdowns, old buses being decommissioned, and lack of interest from contractors are pushing PMPML into a critical situation. This is concerning given the increasing demand for public transportation in Pune.

Back in 2016, PMPML had 2,055 buses catering to 10 lakh daily passengers. Fast forward to 2024, with 13-14 lakh daily passengers, the fleet has decreased to just 1,528 buses. This has resulted in overcrowded buses, longer waiting times, and frustrated commuters.

The situation worsens with two out of seven contractors terminating their services, leading to the withdrawal of 233 buses. Additionally, 60 buses have been decommissioned, and the aging fleet is experiencing frequent breakdowns, impacting service reliability.

Procuring new buses has also been a challenge, with the tender process failing to attract enough interest from suppliers. The future looks uncertain with around 500 more buses expected to reach the end of their service life soon.

Delays in key projects like the ‘PMP Go’ mobile app and the Aundh Bus Depot opening have added to the woes. Promising initiatives to improve PMPML’s operations have been stalled due to administrative hurdles and frequent transfers of key officials.

Nitin Narvekar, Joint Managing Director of PMPM, mentioned that while efforts are being made to introduce 400 CNG buses, the tender process is facing challenges. The timeline for the introduction of these buses remains uncertain, highlighting the pressing issues faced by PMPML.
