Hey there, folks! Big news coming out of Pune today. Byramjee Jeejeebhoy (BJ) Government Medical College is stepping up their game when it comes to security for female doctors. This move comes in response to a horrific incident in Kolkata where a resident doctor was raped and murdered.

The college administration is ramping up security measures by increasing the number of CCTV cameras on campus and at Sassoon General Hospital. Dr. Eknath Pawar, the Dean of BJ Medical College, announced that these cameras will be strategically placed in key locations to ensure the safety of female doctors.

With the sprawling campuses of BJ Medical College and Sassoon Hospital, female resident doctors often have to navigate between departments during night shifts. To address this, female security guards will now escort doctors at night, and regular patrols will be conducted. The administration is also working on improving lighting in areas that are lacking to enhance safety.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra State Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has initiated an indefinite strike in protest of the Kolkata incident. Out of the 566 resident doctors at BJ Medical College, 386 are participating in the strike while 180 are still working. Faculty from other departments are stepping in to assist with patient care in the outpatient department, ensuring that patient care at Sassoon Hospital remains unaffected.

And speaking of patient care, here are the daily average statistics for August 13 at Sassoon Hospital: 21-48 major surgeries, 38-145 minor surgeries, and 12-30 deliveries. Dr. Pawar reassured the public that despite the strike, they are taking all necessary steps to ensure that patient care continues uninterrupted. They will also be reaching out to the Public Health Department and the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Health Department to request additional doctors.

That’s all for now from Pune, stay tuned for more updates on this developing story. Stay safe and take care!
