In response to the recent tragic incident in Kolkata, where a female resident doctor was raped and murdered, BJ Medical College in Pune is stepping up its security measures to protect its own female doctors. Under the guidance of Dr. Eknath Pawar, the college administration has announced new initiatives to enhance safety on campus.

CCTV cameras have already been installed at key locations throughout the college and Sassoon Hospital premises, but in light of recent events, the number of cameras will be increased. A special committee has been formed to identify additional areas for camera placement. Female security guards will now accompany female resident doctors as they move between departments, especially during night shifts. Regular patrols by security guards and improved lighting in dark areas will also be implemented.

In response to the Kolkata incident, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has initiated an indefinite strike, with 386 out of 566 resident doctors at BJ Medical College participating. Patient care at Sassoon Hospital is being managed by doctors from other departments, with major surgeries averaging 21 per day, minor surgeries averaging 38, and deliveries averaging 12.

Dr. Pawar has assured that patient care will not be significantly affected by the strike, but additional steps will be taken if necessary. A letter will be sent to public health and municipal health departments to request additional doctors to ensure continued patient care at Sassoon Hospital.
