Hey there, folks! Here’s the latest scoop from Pune – the Maharashtra state’s Woman and Child Development Commissioner has set up a special committee to investigate the bail granted to the teenager involved in the Porsche Taycan crash on May 19. The committee will focus on whether the Juvenile Justice Board followed proper procedures when granting bail to the 17-year-old, who was released just 15 hours after the accident.

The teenager was let out on bail with a surety of Rs 7,500 and a promise from his grandfather to keep him away from bad influences. He was also required to write a 300-word essay on road accidents and visit the regional transport office to learn about rules and regulations. However, following public outcry and a review by the police, the bail was revoked on May 22, and the teenager was sent to an observation home until June 5.

Commissioner Prashant Narnaware has stated that the committee will scrutinize the actions of the two board members appointed by the state government, with the report due by the first week of June. Depending on the findings, their appointments could be terminated.

Critics have slammed the initial bail conditions as insufficient given the gravity of the accident. Anuradha Sahasrabudhe, a former JJB member, emphasized the need for thoughtful decision-making under the Juvenile Justice Act. Advocate Satya Muley also raised concerns about the impartiality of the JJB, pointing out that the public prosecutor should have considered trying the juvenile as an adult.

With 106 children in conflict with the law across the state, Narnaware highlighted the importance of ensuring proper procedures are followed. The accident, which claimed the lives of two IT engineers from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, has sparked a heated debate on the handling of juvenile offenders in the justice system.
