Hey there, folks! Pune recently witnessed a heartwarming display of unity and support as more than 400 citizens came together for a silent march in Shivajinagar. The march, aptly named “Save River, Save Lives,” was organized by a coalition of over 15 organizations who are passionate about protecting Pune’s rivers.

Starting at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Park, participants tied blue rakhis as a symbol of their dedication to preserving the rivers. They made a pledge to avoid encroaching on riverbeds, dumping waste into the water, polluting it with sewage, and harming the biodiversity along the banks.

Some familiar faces like activists Sarang Yadwadkar and Shailaja Deshpande, along with former MLA Mohan Joshi and former Rajya Sabha member Vandana Chavan, joined the march to show their support. The atmosphere was described as emotional and charged with a sense of urgency.

The group is now planning to meet and discuss strategies to reduce flood risks in the future. They also intend to reach out to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to push for immediate action on their demands.

These demands include clearing obstructions and waste from the river, assisting flood victims, establishing flood lines, and ensuring that urban development follows strict regulations to protect the rivers. They also called for a thorough survey of groundwater sources along the riverbanks to implement conservation efforts.

Former MLA Mohan Joshi highlighted the issue of encroachments on the riverbeds, particularly by the PMC itself under the guise of development projects. The march and demands underscore the importance of sustainable river management to prevent future disasters and safeguard the well-being of Pune’s residents.

That’s all for now, folks! Stay tuned for more updates on this important issue.
