Pune, 26th August 2024: The Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, Vijay Wadettiwar, has slammed Siddhesh Kadam, Chairman of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), for his controversial visit to the Mercedes-Benz plant in Pune. Wadettiwar criticized Kadam for conducting an unannounced inspection at the plant, raising concerns about the presence of 31 private individuals during the visit, and the alleged prohibited photography that took place. The deleted tweet from the MPCB’s official Twitter handle regarding the inspection has also sparked speculation and questions about transparency.
The MPCB inspection revealed alleged non-compliance by the Mercedes-Benz plant with state pollution control guidelines, but the lack of prior notice to the company has drawn criticism. The large entourage accompanying Kadam, of which only a few were actual MPCB officers, has raised further concerns about the nature of the visit. This controversy has led to political uproar and calls for clarification from Kadam and the MPCB.
Wadettiwar’s criticism comes after similar remarks from MP Amol Kolhe of NCP (SP) and MP Priyanka Chaturvedi of Shivsena UBT, who warned that such actions could deter investors and harm Maharashtra’s economic prospects.
