Hey folks, exciting news coming your way from Pune! The Botanical Survey of India (BSI) is all set to unveil a brand new botanical garden in Mundhwa, spanning a whopping 44 acres. This garden is not your average one – it’s dedicated to preserving Maharashtra’s very own endemic plant species.

Picture this – over 400 species of plants native to India will be showcased at the Mundhwa Botanical Garden, with a whopping 50 of them exclusive to Maharashtra. One standout is the endangered Shiv Suman flower, a plant that holds historical significance for the state.

According to A. Benniamin, the head honcho at BSI’s Western Regional Centre, the idea for this garden came about after they realized that human activities were putting these local species at risk. So, they decided to take matters into their own hands and create a safe haven for these plants.

But wait, there’s more! The garden won’t just focus on Maharashtra’s flora – it will also feature endangered species from Karnataka, like the nutmeg, varnish tree, blackboard tree, wild nutmeg, and Syzygium stocksii. These plants are native to the southern and western parts of India, making them a valuable addition to the garden.

The project kicked off in 2023 with BSI scientists scouring the Western Ghats in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Goa to collect seeds of endemic plants. These seeds were then nurtured in a lab before being transplanted into the garden for further growth.

Benniamin stressed the importance of this initiative in safeguarding these plant species from extinction caused by human interference. The Mundhwa Botanical Garden is not just a pretty sight – it’s a crucial hub for conserving the region’s botanical heritage for generations to come.

So, mark your calendars and get ready to explore the wonders of Maharashtra’s endemic plant species at the Mundhwa Botanical Garden!
