If you’ve been driving around Pune lately, you’ve probably noticed the sorry state of the roads. Potholes seem to be popping up everywhere, causing frustration for residents and commuters alike. The blame has been placed squarely on the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), with many criticizing their lack of action in repairing the damaged roads.
The PMC has acknowledged the issue and promised to fix the roads once the rains ease up. However, a major hurdle they’re facing is the shortage of hot mix needed for repairs. The hot mix plant at Yerawada, which usually churns out 200 tonnes of hot mix per day, has been shut down due to the heavy rainfall. This has left the PMC scrambling to find alternative solutions for road repairs.
Despite reaching out to contractors and the Public Works Department (PWD) for hot mix, the PMC has been unable to secure any. In the meantime, they’ve resorted to using paver blocks and cold mix to patch up the potholes. Unfortunately, these temporary fixes are proving to be ineffective, with the heavy traffic quickly wearing them down.
Anirudh Pavaskar, head of the PMC’s road department, emphasized the importance of hot mix for road repairs. He stated, “When the gravel is wet, the mixture is not useful. Road repairs cannot be done effectively until the rains subside.” Until then, Pune residents may have to brace themselves for bumpy rides on pothole-ridden roads.
