The upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections are heating up, especially in Junnar Taluka of Pune District. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) currently holds the MLA seat in Junnar, but Indian National Congress leader Satyasheel Sherkar is eyeing the constituency for the upcoming elections. This has caused speculation of a potential rebellion within the Mahavikas Aghadi.

Within the NCP, there are two factions with Atul Benke aligning with the Ajit Pawar-led NCP but also meeting with Sharad Pawar, leading to rumors of a possible shift to the Nationalist Congress Sharadchandra Pawar Party (NCP-SP). This has caused unease within the Congress party as well.

Congress youth leader Satyasheel Sherkar is determined to contest the elections in Junnar, which has led to discussions with prominent Congress leader Dr. Vishwajeet Kadam. Dr. Kadam has hinted at applying the ‘Sangli pattern’ to Junnar, similar to what happened in the Lok Sabha Elections in Sangli in 2024.

The ‘Sangli pattern’ refers to the decision to allow Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) to contest against the incumbent BJP MLA in Sangli, despite the constituency being a stronghold of the Congress Party. This led to Vasant Patil’s grandson, Vishal Patil, running as an independent with support from Dr. Vishwajeet Kadam and ultimately winning the election.

If a similar situation arises in Junnar where Congress is not given a chance to contest, a rebellion akin to the ‘Sangli Pattern’ might unfold. Stay tuned as the political drama in Junnar continues to unfold leading up to the elections.
