President Droupadi Murmu’s upcoming visit to Pune has highlighted the city’s ongoing road repair challenges, particularly on Ganeshkhind Road. The road is currently riddled with potholes, making it difficult for commuters to navigate.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has reached out to the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to address the issue, as a multi-storey flyover and Metro railway route work is in progress on the road. However, delays from the PMRDA have prompted the PMC to take matters into their own hands by filling potholes themselves.

With the President’s visit fast approaching on September 3, the PMC has taken action to repair the road, despite it technically being the responsibility of the PMRDA. The PMC plans to recover expenses from the PMRDA at a later date.

Due to frequent shutdowns of the hot-mix plant in Yerwada during the rainy season, the PMC has faced a shortage of materials needed for road repair. As a result, the civic body has decided to purchase hot-mix from private contractors to expedite the process.

Although efforts have been made to address the road conditions, traffic congestion and delays persist on Ganeshkhind Road. The PMC, PMRDA, and Traffic Police have held meetings to find solutions, but improvements have been slow to come.

In the meantime, the PMC has already filled 432 potholes, used 1,334 tonnes of tar, repaired 1,981 sq m of road area, and fixed 36 chambers as part of their ongoing road repair efforts. As Pune prepares for the President’s visit, the city’s infrastructure challenges continue to be in the spotlight.
