Pune, 31st August 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is facing heat from waste pickers as the agreement with SWaCH for door-to-door garbage collection has not been signed despite approval from authorities. Workers protested outside the PMC building in heavy rain, demanding raincoats and other materials.

The PMC has historically entered into short-term contracts with SWaCH, causing anxiety among waste pickers about job security. After negotiations, a five-year agreement was agreed upon, but remains unsigned even after six months. The agreement includes harsh conditions like termination for poor performance, sparking outrage among waste pickers.

Prominent figures like Dr Baba Adhav and Prashant Jagtap joined the protest, criticizing the PMC for favoring private contractors over SWaCH. Waste pickers expressed frustration over the delay in signing the agreement, calling it an insult to their work.

Commissioner of PMC, Dr Rajendra Bhosale, assured that the agreement with SWaCH will be finalized within 15 days. The situation remains tense as waste pickers continue to demand fair treatment and job security from the PMC.
