The much-awaited monsoon has finally made its way into the Indian subcontinent, bringing relief from the scorching summer heat. The Meteorological Department has confirmed that the monsoon has arrived in Kerala with heavy rainfall, providing a much-needed respite for many states battling high temperatures.

Surprisingly, the monsoon arrived two days earlier than expected, spreading into most parts of Northeast India on May 30th. The first showers have been recorded in the Kottayam district of Kerala, signaling the beginning of the rainy season in the region.

The early onset of the southwest monsoon has been attributed to Cyclone ‘Remal’, which passed through West Bengal and Bangladesh recently. This cyclone’s movement has influenced the monsoon flow towards the Bay of Bengal, leading to its premature arrival in Northeast India.

In Kerala, heavy rainfall has been persistent for the past few days, increasing the precipitation levels for the month of May. Typically, the monsoon arrives in Kerala on June 1st, while other states in the region expect it by June 5th.

The India Meteorological Department officially declares the onset of the monsoon in Kerala when 14 centers in the state and neighboring areas receive rainfall of 2.5 mm or more for two consecutive days after May 10th, accompanied by specific weather conditions.

Scientists are closely monitoring El Niño conditions, with the potential development of La Niña conditions by August-September. These conditions could impact the monsoon pattern in the upcoming months, affecting the rainfall distribution across the country.
