Pune’s District and Sessions Court is gearing up for a major expansion, with 15,000 square feet of space being allocated in the upcoming multi-modal hub of the metro system. This move comes as part of a larger effort to enhance the court’s facilities, with the government warehouse in Shivajinagar playing a key role in the process.

The idea of expanding the court was first discussed back in February 2015, during a meeting between the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and the Chief Minister. The decision was made to acquire the nearby warehouse space for this purpose, which was initially under the jurisdiction of the Department of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Protection before being transferred to Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation.

Supreme Court Justice Abhay Oak and Mahametro officials recently finalized the allocation of space within the multi-modal hub, including parking facilities for the court. This marks a significant step forward in meeting the needs of Pune’s judicial system.

Funding for the project has been approved, with Rs 15,04,59,000 set aside for construction. The metro authorities have specified that Rs 15 crores or the equivalent market value must be paid at the time of space transfer. Plans and layouts for the new court space must be submitted to both the government and the High Court, with the District Court expected to initiate the registration process through the district collector.

Advocate Santosh Khamkar, President of the Pune Bar Association, has stated that a formal request will be made to the High Court regarding the utilization of the new space for court operations and lawyer facilities. The PBA will play an active role in ensuring that all necessary follow-ups and administrative actions are taken.

This expansion is expected to greatly improve the infrastructure available to Pune’s judicial system, addressing the increasing demands placed on the District and Sessions Court.
