So, you know how we’re always hearing about new inventions and breakthroughs in biotechnology and medtech, right? Well, on August 30, 2024, CSIR-NCL in Pune hosted a roundtable discussion all about patenting these cool inventions. And let me tell you, it was pretty insightful!

The event was a collaboration between the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks and the Danish Patent and Trademark Office. The goal was to talk about patenting practices in biotech and biomedical fields, comparing India and Denmark’s insights. They wanted to see if the current patent examination processes need updating to keep up with the fast-paced changes in these industries.

Over 40 attendees showed up, including officials from Indian Patent Offices, Danish Patent Office examiners, CSIR labs, industrial bodies, entrepreneurs, and more. They discussed things like patent examination processes in India and Denmark, commercialization opportunities, and the need for clear guidelines in these fields.

CSIR-NCL’s Intellectual Property Group led the discussions, highlighting their strong IP culture dating back to the 1940s. They talked about landmark cases involving turmeric, basmati, and neem, as well as the development of the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library. They also touched on the importance of biological material deposition in patent applications and the support provided by the Venture Center business incubator.

Overall, the roundtable emphasized the need for ongoing discussions to refine patenting practices and support innovation in biotechnology and medtech. It’s pretty cool to see all these experts coming together to make sure these inventions get the protection and recognition they deserve.
