As the population of Pimpri-Chinchwad continues to grow, so do the number of vehicles on the road. The ‘Pay and Park’ policy introduced by the PCMC was meant to alleviate traffic congestion and promote efficient public transport usage. However, due to a lack of support from officials, political opposition, and citizen protests, the contractor has decided to terminate the policy at four experimental locations.

With an additional 3.75 lakh vehicles registered in the last three years, traffic issues have intensified in the city. The initial plan was to implement the policy at 80 locations, but it only started at 20 spots on 1st July 2021. Nirmala Auto Care, the contractor, had to withdraw from 16 out of 20 locations due to financial constraints.

Now, with the contractor pulling out of the remaining four locations, vehicles are once again occupying road space, exacerbating traffic congestion. PCMC is considering implementing the ‘Pay and Park’ policy at the ward office level to promote driver discipline and generate revenue. Despite the challenges faced, the administration remains hopeful that this initiative will help alleviate traffic jams in the city.
