Kishor Sarpotdar, President of the Maharashtra Catering Association, has noted a significant increase in the demand for hand-crafted steamed modaks this year. Poona Guest House, a renowned establishment known for its commitment to tradition, has started producing Ukdiche modaks daily throughout the year, showcasing their dedication to preserving this age-old tradition.
Commercial vendors in Pune are also gearing up for the festival, with professionals set to begin the preparation of modaks starting from Friday midnight. Sarpotdar’s team alone plans to produce a whopping 25,000 modaks on the opening day of Ganesh Chaturthi.
With over 200,000 hand-crafted modaks expected to be made in Pune this year, each modak is priced between 40 to 50 rupees. The business of making modaks has expanded beyond Pune, reaching rural areas as well, with vendors utilizing social media for promotion and offering home delivery services to cater to a wider audience.
The meticulous process of preparing modaks is a key aspect of the festival, with vendors ensuring that these sweet treats are made the night before Ganesh Chaturthi and distributed by 11 a.m. on the first day of the festival. This year, approximately 1,500 vendors are involved in meeting the high demand for modaks.
Local vendors like Vaidehi Suryavanshi have noted the rising demand for traditional modaks among both Maharashtrian and non-Maharashtrian families. With bookings for the first three days already filled, at least 1,000 modaks are expected to be sold per day, highlighting the widespread appeal of these beloved treats.
As Ganesh Chaturthi draws near, the popularity of Ukdiche modaks continues to soar in Pune, reaffirming their status as a cherished part of the festival’s traditions.
