Hey there, Pune folks! It seems like the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is facing some budgetary challenges with the biomining tender for waste at the Fursungi, Uruli Devachi waste depot. Word on the street is that the eligible contractor has tacked on an extra Rs 135 for tipping charges, making the total cost around Rs 13.50 crore for 100 tons of waste.

The PMC has been on a mission to biomine a whopping 53 lakh metric tonnes of waste as per the National Green Tribunal’s order. They’ve already tackled 21 lakh metric tonnes through tenders in 2016 and 2021. Now, a new tender has been approved for 10 lakh metric tonnes, with a tipping fee set at Rs 844 per tonne.

But here’s the kicker – the tender required contractors to have experience disposing of two lakh tonnes of Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF), narrowing down the competition to just two qualified contractors. And guess what? Both of these contractors were also in the running for the 2022 tender.

Bhumi Green Energy Company seems to be leading the pack with a bid of Rs 979 per tonne, which is significantly higher than the municipal rate and market price. In comparison, biomining rates are much lower in Sangli and Lucknow at Rs 420 and Rs 612 per tonne, respectively.

The PMC isn’t taking this price hike lightly and has requested a breakdown of the tender rate within seven days. If the rates aren’t reduced, it could cost the PMC an extra Rs 13.50 crore for 100 tonnes of waste – a cost they simply can’t afford.

Looks like it’s back to the bargaining table for the PMC and the contractors. Stay tuned for more updates on this waste management saga in Pune!
