Hey Pune peeps, exciting news coming your way! The central and state governments have selected 12 forts across the country to be nominated as World Heritage Sites under the ‘Maratha’ Military Landscapes’. And guess what? The UNESCO committee will be visiting the forts in Pune district from September 27 to 30.

To spread awareness about this nomination, Dr Suhas Diwase, the District Collector, has ordered competitions to be organized in the city and district. People will be making replicas of forts and documenting architectural details. Plus, digital boards with information about the forts will be installed in Pimpri-Chinchwad during Ganeshotsav.

The 12 forts that have been nominated were used as military bases during the Maratha rule to fend off enemies. These include well-known forts like Shivneri, Lohagad, and Raigad. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites are divided into cultural and natural categories, and the forts of Maharashtra have made it to the cultural category.

Dr Diwase has announced some exciting prizes for the competitions – Rs one lakh for the first place, Rs 50,000 for the second, and Rs 25,000 for the third. Villages and schools can submit one fort-castle replica each, and the best villages will receive funds for public and civic facilities.

There’s also an architectural documentation competition for city and district colleges, historical research institutes, and architectural institutes. So get ready to showcase your love for the forts of Pune and be a part of this amazing initiative!
