Pune, 9th September 2024: Potholes in Pune have been a major headache for commuters for years, causing traffic jams and frustration. But now, the Pune city traffic police are taking matters into their own hands by geotagging potholes across the city to keep track of repairs and identify new ones.

In the past couple of weeks, around 800 potholes have been geotagged by the traffic police as part of this initiative. Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil stated, “We are working with the Pune Municipal Corporation to create a digital system for road maintenance. The geotagged pothole locations are shared with the authorities for speedy repairs.”

After a survey in July revealed 554 potholes at 317 major intersections in the city, the police have expanded their efforts to cover all roads. With the recent heavy rains causing more potholes to form, police teams are now collecting data on these road hazards, including photos and precise geotagged locations, to send to the PMC for repairs.

To streamline the process, a special vehicle has been deployed for this purpose, allowing teams to capture data quickly and efficiently. Once repairs are completed, local traffic division officers ensure that the potholes have been fixed properly.

With this proactive approach, the Pune city traffic police are hoping to minimize traffic congestion caused by potholes and ensure smoother journeys for all commuters.
