As the temperatures drop and winters approach in Mumbai and Pune, a recent consumer survey has shed light on the importance of last-mile delivery companies adopting Electric Vehicle (EV) fleets to reduce air pollution and emissions. According to the survey, a whopping 99% of respondents in both cities recognize the significance of this transition, with 70% of consumers showing willingness to switch to brands that have strong emission reduction commitments.

The last mile delivery sector alone is responsible for emitting 500,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere as of 2024. The Sustainability Mobility Network (SMN) released these findings during a webinar on World EV Day, highlighting the need for companies to transition to EVs.

In Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, the survey results revealed that almost all respondents (99.8%) believe that the transition to EV fleets is important for reducing air pollution. Additionally, 85.5% of respondents are willing to switch to a company with stronger emissions reduction commitments. Pune residents also demonstrated high awareness levels regarding air quality, with 73% of respondents stating so.

In Mumbai, 99.8% of respondents also emphasized the importance of companies transitioning to EV fleets. However, only 55% of consumers indicated a willingness to switch to brands with stronger emissions reduction commitments. Mumbai had the lowest level of effective communication from companies regarding air pollution reduction measures, at 22.4%.

Overall, the survey encompassed 760 consumers from Mumbai, Pune, and several other cities across India. The respondents emphasized the need for companies to prioritize sustainability without increasing prices for consumers. They believe that businesses should bear the costs associated with sustainability initiatives.

Experts, including Abhijit Ghorpade from Maharashtra State Climate Action Cell, Bhagwan Keshbhat from Waatavaran Foundation, and others, have highlighted the urgency of transitioning delivery vehicles to EVs to reduce emissions and improve air quality in cities like Mumbai and Pune. They hope that the survey results will encourage companies to accelerate their EV transition efforts and prioritize sustainability in their operations.
