Hey Pune folks, get ready for the 15th edition of the Nirmalya to Nisarga Initiative by SWaCH! This awesome environmental campaign is all about managing votive offerings during the Ganesh festival, and this year, over 200 waste pickers are geared up to make a difference across 47 key immersion locations in Pune.

Started in 2009, this initiative focuses on collecting and composting Nirmalya—think flowers, leaves, and durva—to ensure these offerings are returned to nature responsibly. So far, the program has successfully managed over 100 tonnes of Nirmalya, making a significant impact on environmental conservation.

The best part? This initiative is a collaboration between SWaCH waste pickers and the Pune Municipal Corporation, showing a commitment to both cultural and environmental responsibilities. These waste pickers are true heroes, going above and beyond to keep Pune clean and support the city’s celebrations.

Mark your calendars for September 12 and 17, when SWaCH waste pickers will be at major immersion points in Pune and newly added villages to collect Nirmalya. Remember, avoid tossing Nirmalya in open spaces or water bodies—hand it over to the waste pickers instead.

Saru Waghmare, a Board Member of SWaCH, shared some thoughts on their work and challenges. Despite ongoing contract renewal issues, the waste pickers are dedicated to their mission of keeping Pune clean during the festival. Let’s show our support by handing over Nirmalya separately to the waste pickers and ensuring no other waste is mixed with it.

So, let’s all do our part to safeguard Pune’s environment and culture during the Ganesh festival. Together, we can make a difference!
