A 38-year-old man found himself in hot water after allegedly lighting up a cigarette on an Indigo flight from Delhi to Pune. The incident occurred in the wee hours of Monday morning, with the passenger being detained upon landing in Pune. Despite being released a few hours later, he was issued a notice by the Airport police to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

Authorities are puzzled as to how the man managed to sneak a lighter on board the flight, especially with stringent security measures in place at airports. An IndiGo spokesperson acknowledged the incident, noting that the passenger exhibited disruptive behavior during the flight.

The man was handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) upon arrival in Pune and then escorted to the police station at the airline’s request. The case was filed based on a complaint from IndiGo’s security executive, with the passenger facing charges under Section 125 of the Aircraft Act for endangering the safety of others.

Police Inspector Sarjerao Kumbhar revealed that the passenger, a Baner resident, was caught smoking in the plane’s lavatory by a vigilant flight attendant. The cigarette butt was discovered in the trash bin, and the lighter used was confiscated as evidence. The man had been in Delhi for personal reasons and was en route back to Pune at the time of the incident.

Smoking on flights is a severe violation of aviation safety regulations, prompting airlines to report such incidents promptly. The investigation is ongoing, with further actions pending the outcome of the inquiry.
