The Maharashtra State Health Department has taken a proactive approach to prevent the spread of mpox by expanding screening measures to include domestic passengers at major airports. This decision comes after India reported its first confirmed case of mpox in a man who recently returned from an affected region.
Officials have urged the public not to panic, as the patient is currently stable. Airports across the state, including Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, have been instructed to screen passengers for symptoms like skin rashes, fever, headaches, and muscle pain.
Hospitals in these cities have also been directed to prepare isolation wards and monitor patients with mpox-like symptoms. Kasturba Hospital and Seven Hills Hospital in Mumbai, Naidu Hospital in Pune, AIIMS in Nagpur, and the Government Medical College are all on high alert.
The central government has confirmed that the mpox case is linked to international travel and has identified the virus strain as the West African clade 2. This strain is different from the clade 1 strain, which is currently causing a public health emergency, according to the WHO.
Despite these developments, the government has reassured the public that there is no widespread risk at this time. The WHO has emphasized that mpox primarily spreads through close contact with infected individuals, particularly within households.
