In a world plagued by plastic waste, Pune resident Nandan Bhatt is making a difference with his innovative venture, EcoKaari. Established in 2020, this social enterprise focuses on transforming plastic waste into beautiful fabrics, garments, bags, home decor, and office supplies. Bhatt’s inspiration stemmed from his travels in Kashmir, where he saw the devastating effects of plastic pollution firsthand.

After leaving his corporate job in 2013, Bhatt delved into waste management and upcycling. Despite initial challenges, he rebranded his vision in 2020 as EcoKaari, combining sustainability with craftsmanship. With just two artisans at the start, the enterprise gained momentum after a social media influencer shared their story, leading to a surge in orders from across India and beyond.

EcoKaari now employs 25 artisans who work with single-use plastics to create eco-friendly products. By upcycling 20 million plastic bags and processing 5,000 to 10,000 kg of plastic monthly, the enterprise generates a revenue of Rs 8 lakh per month. Corporate clients and international partners have also recognized the value of EcoKaari’s sustainable offerings.

The transformation process involves collecting, cleaning, and processing plastic waste using traditional handloom techniques. The resulting fabric not only serves a practical purpose but also promotes environmental conservation and social responsibility.

Bhatt’s vision for the future is rooted in sustainability, craftsmanship, and community empowerment. As EcoKaari continues to expand, he hopes to inspire others to rethink waste and its potential, illustrating how one person’s dedication can lead to significant environmental impact.

With a growing workforce, impressive upcycling statistics, and a footprint in international markets, EcoKaari exemplifies the power of individual action in the fight against plastic waste. Bhatt’s journey serves as a reminder that change begins with a single idea and a commitment to making a difference.
