Is work stress at the root of a tragic death? That’s the question on everyone’s mind after the Labour Commissioner of Pune paid a visit to the Ernst & Young (EY) office in Yerawada today. The inspection comes in the wake of 26-year-old employee Anna Sebastian Perayil’s untimely passing in July 2024.

Anna’s mother, Anitha Augustine, has come forward with serious allegations against the company, claiming that a toxic work environment, excessive stress, and overwork led to her daughter’s death just four months into her job at EY. The Union Labour Ministry has taken notice of the situation and launched a formal investigation, particularly focusing on the growing concerns surrounding workplace pressure in IT and consulting firms.

In a letter to the authorities, Augustine shared how her daughter’s health deteriorated rapidly due to the intense work demands she faced, which reportedly went unnoticed by her superiors. Additional Labour Commissioner Shailendra Pol confirmed the inspection at Ernst & Young when speaking to Punekar News.

This tragic incident has sparked a larger conversation about the impact of work stress on employees’ well-being. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
