Pune recently played host to a thought-provoking session on the role of Artificial Intelligence in the field of design. Renowned design expert Don Norman shared his insights with designers and students at a special event organized by the Pune Chapter of the Association of Designers of India (ADI) in collaboration with BITS Design School. The event, held at the MCCIA’s Sumant Moolgaonkar auditorium, saw a gathering of design enthusiasts eager to learn from Norman’s expertise.

Norman emphasized the need for designers to view AI as a tool for enhancing creativity and problem-solving rather than a threat. He highlighted the importance of ethical and collaborative AI tools and urged designers to broaden their skills by understanding business language. According to Norman, designers can influence major corporations by speaking the language of profit margins and business strategy.

The design expert also stressed the importance of participatory design and working closely with communities to incorporate local knowledge and resources. He encouraged designers to focus on global collaboration to address complex design challenges in an interconnected world. Norman emphasized the need for continuous learning and adaptation in the design profession, pointing out the importance of integrating multidisciplinary approaches into design education.

The event, organized by ADI, aimed to facilitate knowledge exchange and professional growth within the design community. Attendees, including Balkrishna Mahajan, National President of ADI, and Nandita Abraham, Dean of BITS Design School, found Norman’s insights on AI and design to be both enlightening and inspiring.
