After the tragic death of employee Perayil, the Labour Commissionerate wasted no time in conducting an inspection of EY’s office. What they found was quite concerning – violations related to the Shop Act. This has sparked an investigation into allegations of worker exploitation, particularly focusing on the issue of excessive working hours.

According to state regulations, companies must seek permission for employees to work more than eight hours a day. It seems that EY may have fallen short in this regard. Officials are now proposing the implementation of a central logout system to prevent employees from overworking by automatically logging them out of their laptops after eight hours.

Perayil’s mother has come forward with accusations against EY, claiming that the company’s demanding work environment played a role in her daughter’s death. In a letter to EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani, she expressed her concerns about the impact of long hours and intense workloads on her daughter’s health. EY, however, has denied these allegations.

The Labour Department’s investigation is ongoing and could potentially result in legal action against EY if they are found to be in violation of state regulations regarding employee welfare and working conditions. The outcome of this probe will be closely watched by many in the industry.
