Pune, September 25, 2024: Brace yourselves, Punekars! The weather forecast for the next two days is filled with heavy rainfall and strong winds, all thanks to a low-pressure area that has formed from North Konkan to South Bangladesh. This has created cyclonic conditions over Chhattisgarh, leading to predictions of intense rainfall in North Central Maharashtra and along the North Coast, especially in Palghar and Nashik.

According to experts at the Meteorological Department, the low-pressure area that originated off the coast of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh has weakened, causing cyclonic conditions in the upper atmosphere over Chhattisgarh. This shift in weather patterns has resulted in forecasts of heavy rain, accompanied by gale-force winds and thundershowers in various parts of Maharashtra.

The monsoon seems to have hit the pause button on its return journey, which initially began from Rajasthan and Kutch (Gujarat). The ongoing rainfall in the state is not part of the monsoon’s retreat but is rather due to the low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. Meteorologist Dr. S.K. Sanap has predicted that the current rains will persist for a while, with heavy rainfall expected for the next two days. However, after September 28, a decrease in rainfall intensity is anticipated.

For Thursday, weather alerts have been issued, with a red alert for Palghar and Nashik, a yellow alert for Pune, Raigad, Mumbai, Thane, Dhule, and Nandurbar, and a yellow alert for the rest of the state. Retired meteorologist Manikrao Khule mentioned that while heavy rain will continue for two more days, the intensity is likely to decrease in ten districts, including Nashik, Nagar, Pune, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, and Solapur, starting Saturday.

Dr. S.K. Sanap emphasized that the current rainfall should not be mistaken for return rains. Return rains occur when the monsoon winds are retreating from the state or when they start their return journey. The ongoing rainfall is solely due to the prevailing low-pressure area and is not linked to the monsoon’s withdrawal.

Residents are advised to stay vigilant and prepared for heavy rains and possible disruptions in the upcoming days. Stay safe, Pune!
