Prime Minister Narendra Modi has just unveiled a brand new High-Performance Computing (HPC) system that is set to revolutionize weather and climate research in India. This cutting-edge technology, backed by a whopping ₹850 crore investment, is a game-changer in improving the accuracy of weather forecasts, especially for extreme events.
This HPC project, led by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, is taking India’s computational capacity to new heights, putting us at the forefront of global weather and climate forecasting. The system is set up at two key locations: the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) in Noida.
The Pune facility at IITM is now equipped with a system boasting a remarkable capacity of 11.77 PetaFLOPS and 33 petabytes of storage, while the Noida unit at NCMRWF has 8.24 PetaFLOPS and 24 petabytes of storage. And that’s not all – there’s also a standalone system dedicated to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning applications with a capacity of 1.9 PetaFLOPS.
Thanks to these new systems, the Ministry of Earth Sciences has seen a significant upgrade in its computational power, soaring from 6.8 PetaFLOPS to an impressive 22 PetaFLOPS. This boost will enable more accurate weather forecasts, particularly for extreme weather conditions like tropical cyclones, heatwaves, droughts, and heavy rainfall.
In keeping with tradition, these new HPC systems have been given celestial names related to the sun, such as ‘Arka’ and ‘Arunika,’ carrying on the legacy of systems like Aditya, Bhaskara, Pratyush, and Mihir. These systems are set to revolutionize weather and climate forecasting, predicting cyclones, droughts, and more with the help of AI and ML technologies, ultimately improving disaster readiness and resilience.
By harnessing the power of these state-of-the-art HPC systems, scientists will be able to develop more advanced models using AI and ML, enhancing the delivery of weather-related services and improving the resolution of regional weather models. The goal is to enhance the accuracy and lead time of forecasts, aiding in better prediction and response to climate variability and extreme weather events.
