Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is facing yet another delay in appointing a full-time Dean due to complications surrounding the state’s reservation policy. The proposal regarding the reservation applicable to the Dean’s position is still awaiting approval from the state government, with officials estimating that the appointment process may not conclude until December or January.
The university has been without a full-time Dean for nearly two and a half years, following the end of former Vice-Chancellor Dr. Nitin Karmalkar’s tenure. Interim deans have been managing responsibilities in the meantime, but the process to appoint a new Dean has faced significant roadblocks.
The election code of conduct during the Lok Sabha elections halted the appointment process, and the implementation of the Maratha reservation policy further complicated matters. The state government’s application of reservations to both teaching and administrative roles, including that of the Dean, has delayed the appointment process as the university waits for confirmation on the reservation roster from the ministry.
Once the reservation roster is approved, the university plans to reissue the advertisement for the Dean’s position and accept applications for an additional month. However, with the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections potentially causing further delays, the appointment of a full-time Dean may be pushed back by an additional two to three months.
In essence, the implementation of the reservation policy is causing significant delays in SPPU’s efforts to appoint a full-time Dean, prolonging a vacancy that has lasted for over two years and creating uncertainties in the university’s administrative structure.
