If you want to add a bit of green to your plate, be prepared to dig a little deeper into your pockets in Pune. The prices of popular green vegetables like fenugreek and coriander have soared recently, causing a stir in the local markets.

According to vegetable vendors on Salunke Vihar road, the surge in prices can be attributed to a decrease in supply due to weather conditions. A bunch of coriander is now going for a hefty Rs 60, while fenugreek is priced at Rs 30 to 35. Ouch!

Market yard traders have also noticed a decline in the supply of leafy greens compared to the high demand. Despite receiving 30,000 pairs of fenugreek and 80,000 pairs of coriander on a single day from Latur and Nashik, it’s still not enough to meet the needs of the market, leading to inflated prices.

This discrepancy between supply and demand is evident in the retail market, where fenugreek and coriander bundles are selling for Rs. 30 to 40 and Rs. 50 to 60 respectively. Even onions have seen a price hike of 30 to 40 percent. Good quality greens are fetching even higher prices, creating challenges for both sellers and buyers.

The poor quality of the produce is also a contributing factor to the price increase, as water scarcity has made farming a tough task. With the monsoon season on the horizon, there’s hope that the situation will improve, but it won’t happen overnight. Customers might have to brace themselves for higher prices and limited availability until then.

Leafy vegetable merchant Rajendra Suryavanshi predicts that the price surge will last for at least a month, as the market grapples with the challenges of supplying fresh, high-quality produce. Prices of other leafy greens like spinach, radish, amaranth, chuka, and chawlai have also seen an uptick in the wholesale market, reflecting the overall market dynamics.

So, if you’re a fan of your greens, be prepared to shell out a bit more cash for your favorite veggies in the coming weeks.
