Pune, also known as the “Oxford of the East,” is currently facing a disturbing trend in sexual violence against women. Recent statistics have revealed a significant increase in reported cases, raising critical questions about the safety and security of women in the region.

In just seven months, from February to August of this year, the city has witnessed a troubling number of sexual assault incidents. A total of 265 rape and 450 molestation cases have been recorded, indicating an alarming frequency of these heinous crimes.

The monthly breakdown of cases is particularly concerning, with an average of 38 rapes and 65 molestations each month. In August alone, there were 37 reported rapes and 60 molestations, highlighting the severity of the situation.

In response to the escalating crime rates, the Pune Police have implemented various initiatives aimed at enhancing the safety and security of women and children. These include the Damini Pathak, a dedicated squad for addressing women’s safety, and Police Kaka and Police Didi, community policing efforts involving local law enforcement in assisting vulnerable groups.

Despite these initiatives, the consistent reports of sexual violence indicate the inadequacies in current safety measures. It is clear that more needs to be done to protect women in Pune and ensure their safety in the city.
