Manipal Hospital in Pune has introduced a groundbreaking low-cost ECMO system for organ donation, following the success of the National Organ Donation Summit. The event, held in collaboration with various organizations, focused on advancements in organ donation and transplantation, with a particular emphasis on Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD).

Experts at the summit discussed the potential of DCD to expand India’s organ donor pool, highlighting the need for quality assessment and the establishment of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) tailored for the country. Dr. (Col) Avnish Seth, VSM, Head of MOST, highlighted the importance of DCD protocols and techniques like Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP) in improving organ preservation.

Key initiatives announced at the summit include the creation of the National Consortium on NRP, aimed at improving organ donation procedures nationwide. The introduction of a low-cost hybrid ECMO system designed for DCD cases was also a significant highlight, promising to enhance organ viability for transplantation.

Manipal Hospitals’ Managing Director and CEO, Dilip Jose, expressed commitment to raising awareness and improving organ donation systems in India. Dr. Anil Kumar, Director of NOTTO, emphasized the importance of quality assessment in organ donation, stressing the need for excellence throughout the donation and transplantation process.
