Pune Police have made a significant breakthrough in the brutal gang rape case of a 21-year-old woman at Bopdev Ghat. Three suspects have been detained in connection with the incident, which took place on the night of 3rd October 2024. The attackers tied up the victim’s male friend and then gang-raped the woman. The suspects, who are from another state and work as labourers in Mantarwadi, have a history of crimes including theft.
After the assault, the suspects tried to evade capture by manipulating CCTV footage and traveling through less-monitored areas. The police deployed 60 teams and 700 officers to track down the culprits, using technical data and reviewing CCTV footage. They also examined hotels, villages, and local businesses for leads. One suspect was detained in Yewlewadi, while the other two were apprehended in Nagpur.
State Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis praised the police for their efforts in identifying individuals with criminal histories in the area. Sketches of the suspects were released, and a reward of ₹10 lakh was announced for information leading to their capture. The case is still under investigation, but with the suspects in custody, Pune Police aim to bring justice to the victim swiftly.
