It’s official, Bengaluru and Pune have made it to the top ten list of the world’s most congested cities! According to the 2023 TomTom Traffic Index, Bengaluru snagged the sixth spot with an average travel time of 28 minutes and 10 seconds to cover 10 kilometers, while Pune wasn’t far behind at seventh place with commuters spending an average of 27 minutes and 50 seconds for the same distance. These rankings shed light on the serious traffic issues these cities are facing, thanks to rapid population growth and insufficient road infrastructure.

In a global analysis of 387 cities, the 2023 TomTom Traffic Index looked at how long it takes to travel 10 kilometers in each city, giving us a glimpse into the congestion levels and its impact on travel time, speed, and overall quality of life.

When it comes to India, Bengaluru and Pune are leading the pack in terms of traffic troubles:
– Bengaluru has a congestion level of 63%, resulting in drivers losing around 132 hours per year stuck in traffic. The average speed? Just 18 km/h, making for some pretty frustrating commutes.
– Pune isn’t faring much better, with a congestion level of 57% leading to a yearly time loss of approximately 128 hours. The average speed here is slightly higher at 19 km/h.

But it’s not just India feeling the traffic woes. London, UK, takes the crown as the most congested city in the world, where drivers spend an average of 37 minutes and 20 seconds to travel 10 kilometers. With a congestion level of 45%, commuters in London are losing up to 148 hours a year, with an average speed of just 14 km/h.

The 2023 TomTom Traffic Index has shown that average speeds in many cities have slightly decreased, with congestion getting worse in some areas. While 82 cities have managed to maintain their average speeds over time, the traffic nightmares in cities like Bengaluru and Pune highlight the urgent need for better road infrastructure and more efficient transport solutions. Looks like it’s time to buckle up and brace ourselves for more traffic jams ahead!
