Hey Pune folks, exciting news for you all! The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is gearing up to implement a robust sewage management system in the 23 newly included villages within its jurisdiction. And guess what? They have allocated a whopping Rs 1,367.94 Crores for this important project.

Initially, PMC was planning to secure a Rs 530 Crores loan from a bank. However, they have switched gears and are now looking to get a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at lower interest rates. Smart move, PMC!

The decision to include these 23 villages in PMC was made by the Maharashtra State Government back in July 2021, recognizing the rapid growth in the area. In fact, back in 2017, 11 new villages were also brought under PMC, with sewage management projects worth Rs 392 crores already in progress.

PMC has big plans for the sewage management infrastructure in these 23 villages, taking into account population growth projections until 2054. This includes setting up 471 km of sewerage channels, with 90.42 km of main sewerage channels, all costing a whopping Rs 922.65 crores. Additionally, seven sewage treatment plants with a total capacity of 201 MLD will be established, costing Rs 445 crore. Talk about a comprehensive plan!

Considering the hefty price tag, PMC explored bank loans but found the interest rates to be too high. So now, they are in talks with JICA for financing options. They have already secured a loan of Rs 841 crore from JICA for the Mula Mutha Purification Project at an interest rate of less than 1%, which is way lower than market rates. And they are now discussing the remaining Rs 834.19 crore with JICA. Looks like PMC is all set to make this ambitious project a reality.

Exciting times ahead for Pune as PMC aims to improve the sewage management system in these newly included villages. Keep an eye out for updates on the upcoming meeting scheduled for June 10 to move these plans forward!
