The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to establish a timeline for the construction of sewage treatment plants (STPs) along the Indrayani river to combat pollution. PMRDA submitted an affidavit stating that a detailed project report for an 87-kilometer stretch of the river is under review. The lack of a specific timeline for the completion of STPs was highlighted by the NGT, prompting the need for accountability and progress in the setup process.
The bench emphasized the importance of fixing a timeline for the establishment of STPs to ensure timely completion. The involvement of six civic bodies has been mandated by the NGT to engage in pollution abatement efforts and submit their roles and responsibilities within a four-week period. This directive marks a significant step towards addressing pollution in the Indrayani river and restoring its ecological balance.
The next hearing in January 2025 will be crucial in monitoring the progress of this initiative and ensuring the timely execution of necessary measures. The establishment of STPs is expected to play a key role in safeguarding the environment for future generations.
