India’s gaming industry is on the rise, with over 45 crore gamers in the country, according to government data. Pune, in particular, is seeing a surge in gaming centers to meet the growing demand.

The Covid-19 pandemic played a role in boosting Pune’s gaming industry, with foot traffic at gaming centers increasing post-pandemic. The owner of Intencity noted that they now see around 70-80 visitors a day, up from 40-50 before the pandemic.

Institutions in Pune are also getting on board with the gaming trend. The Institute of Sports Science and Technology (ISST) has set up an esports center with gaming consoles, virtual reality setups, and a car simulator. The center hosts monthly gaming tournaments, contributing to the city’s esports scene.

While India’s gaming industry is growing, challenges persist. Indian gamers still face a lack of recognition and support compared to other countries. Advocates believe that greater government involvement could help legitimize and support the industry.

Some of the most popular games in Pune include Rainbow 6 Siege, Forza Horizon 5, Valorant, and Counter-Strike (1.6). As Pune solidifies its position as Maharashtra’s gaming hub, there is optimism for the industry’s future with hopes for increased support from the government and society.
