1. Retired Supreme Court Judge Abhay Sapre, Chairman of the Supreme Court-constituted Road Safety Committee, stressed the importance of strict enforcement of road safety regulations in Pune.
  2. Justice Sapre urged all relevant authorities to develop a comprehensive policy aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of citizens in the city.
  3. During a Road Safety Committee meeting at Vidhan Bhavan, Justice Sapre called for making helmets mandatory for bikers as part of measures to reduce road fatalities.
  4. Senior officials in attendance at the meeting included Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar, Divisional Commissioner Dr. Chandrakant Pulkundwar, and other key government officials.
  5. Justice Sapre expressed concern over the rising number of road accident victims due to reckless driving and emphasised the need for active collaboration between transport, police, and other government agencies.
  6. He highlighted the importance of citizens adhering to traffic rules, including vehicle maintenance, seat belt usage, avoiding mobile phone use while driving, and refraining from driving under the influence of alcohol.
  7. Justice Sapre recommended mandatory helmet use for two-wheeler riders and called for a Road Safety Week to raise awareness about traffic rules and safe driving practices.
  8. Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar reported a reduction in accident-related deaths on key highways in Pune and Divisional Commissioner Dr. Chandrakant Pulkundwar announced mandatory helmet use for government employees.
  9. Justice Sapre commended the ‘Accident-Free Wari’ campaign by the Pune Regional Transport Office and acknowledged the efforts of the Transport Department in implementing road safety measures.
  10. The meeting also saw the participation of regional transport officers from Nanded, Nagpur, Baramati, and Gondia, highlighting a collective effort towards improving road safety in Pune.
