The Pune-Mumbai Expressway is set to become safer with the installation of 436 advanced CCTV cameras as part of the Highway Traffic Management System (HTMS). This system, a joint effort between the MSRDC and the state transport department, aims to monitor and improve road safety on the notoriously accident-prone expressway.
The HTMS works by monitoring vehicle speed in real-time, detecting unsafe lane changes, and automatically imposing penalties on violators. With features such as speed limit signage and real-time data analysis, authorities can take swift action against reckless drivers to ensure better traffic management.
According to MSRDC’s superintending engineer, Rahul Vasaikar, trial runs are currently underway to test the system’s capabilities. Once fully operational, HTMS will also monitor lane-cutting behaviors, a common cause of accidents on the expressway.
The implementation of HTMS is a significant step towards creating safer highways, especially in the ghat sections of the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. By providing accurate data and enabling authorities to proactively address traffic violations, this initiative is expected to make the expressway safer for all motorists.
