Hoarding collapses have become a growing concern in Pune, prompting swift action from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). In Wagholi, 11 dangerous hoardings were recently removed after an inspection of 491 hoardings in the area. The License Inspector, Ganesh Bharti, confirmed that the operation is ongoing to ensure the safety of residents.
In the past month, there have been six hoarding collapses in Mumbai and Pune, resulting in 16 deaths and over 50 injuries in Mumbai, and injuries to three people in Pune. The recent incidents have raised concerns about the structural integrity of hoardings, leading to calls for comprehensive structural audits and removal of hazardous hoardings.
State and municipal authorities have ordered the removal of unauthorized and dangerous hoardings, with the PMC Commissioner issuing a directive to remove such hoardings within seven days. Already, five hoardings in Lohgaon and six in Wagholi and Kharadi have been taken down in compliance with these orders.
The current weather conditions, including heavy rains and strong winds, have increased the risk of hoarding collapses. Torn flexes from hoardings pose a threat to electrical wires, potentially causing power outages. To mitigate these risks, authorities have instructed the removal of flexes from hoardings, resulting in many hoardings being stripped of their advertising material for safety reasons.
Overall, citizens are urged to report any hoardings they believe to be hazardous, as public awareness and concern regarding hoarding safety continue to grow in the region. The PMC and other authorities are taking steps to address the issue and prevent future incidents.
