Following a tragic accident in Kalyaninagar, the lack of oversight on pubs and rooftop restaurants in Pune has come under scrutiny. Shockingly, the municipal corporation has no official records of the number of pubs operating in the city. This revelation has raised concerns about the regulation and monitoring of nightlife establishments, especially in the wake of recent events.
The municipal administration’s approach is perplexing, as they only approve restaurants based on construction regulations, leaving the status of pubs uncertain. They have hinted that the police or district administration may have this crucial information, indicating a lack of coordination among relevant authorities.
In contrast, the Municipal Corporation does keep records of rooftop hotels and has taken action against unauthorized ones. In a proactive move earlier this year, they alerted the police to take necessary steps against such establishments. However, the recent accident in Kalyaninagar has brought the issue of pub oversight to the forefront, exposing a significant gap in information.
The absence of separate records for pubs highlights the difficulties in effectively monitoring and regulating nightlife activities. While the municipality thoroughly examines documentation before granting permission for restaurant operations, their oversight seems to falter when it comes to activities inside these venues.
Despite this, the municipality does have data on rooftop hotels, revealing a troubling trend. There are reportedly 89 unofficial rooftop hotels in the city, with seven of them receiving notices under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1949. Actions have been taken against 53 rooftop hotels, including voluntary dismantling of structures by six hotel owners and the closure of operations in seven establishments. Additionally, stay orders have been issued for seven hotels, indicating the seriousness of the violations.
The construction and development department has also reported instances of criminal activities associated with nine hotels, underscoring the need for stringent oversight and enforcement measures.
