It’s a tale as old as time – scammers preying on the vulnerable, this time targeting elderly individuals in Pune. In a recent incident, a senior citizen fell victim to a phone call from con artists claiming to be from the Delhi police. Using fabricated case numbers and details, the scammers threatened the man with arrest unless he transferred money to them. The victim, who was home alone at the time, filed a complaint with the Pune Cybercrime Police after realizing he had been duped.
But this wasn’t an isolated case. Another elderly resident from Sadashiv Peth was also targeted by scammers posing as Delhi police officials. They accused the victim of illegal money transfers using his Aadhaar information, prompting him to transfer a whopping Rs 25.40 lakh to the fraudsters out of fear of arrest.
Both cases highlight the scammers’ tactics of fear and intimidation, exploiting the victims’ isolation and vulnerability. By creating a fake narrative involving the victims’ personal information in financial crimes like money laundering and drug trafficking, the scammers were able to coerce the victims into complying with their demands.
Authorities have issued a warning to the public to remain vigilant against such fraudulent calls, urging everyone to be cautious and verify the identity of anyone claiming to be from law enforcement. It’s a stark reminder that scammers are always on the prowl, ready to take advantage of unsuspecting individuals, especially the elderly. Stay safe, Pune!
